From £30 to £199: Which Audio Interface Is Worth Your Money

From £30 to £199: Which Audio Interface Is Worth Your Money.

An audio interface does two jobs. It amplifies a microphone signal to a usable level, and it converts that signal into something your computer can record. A £30 box does both. A £199 box does both.

So the honest question is not which one sounds best. It is what you get for each step up, and whether you need it yet. Two things genuinely change as the price rises: how much clean gain the preamps deliver, and how many inputs you can record at once. Almost everything else on the spec sheet is a tie-breaker.

All prices are sourced from genuine retailers, including VAT.

£30 — Behringer U-Phoria UMC22

What it is. One XLR combo input, one instrument input, one headphone output. Records at 48kHz and 16-bit.

Who it’s for. Someone who needs to get a vocal into a laptop this week and has £30.

What it does badly. 16-bit at 48kHz is the ceiling here, and it is the only unit on this list that cannot do 24-bit. That costs you headroom, which is the margin between a usable take and a clipped one.

Verdict. It works. Treat it as a bridge, not a destination.

£58 — Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD

What it is. Two combo inputs with MIDAS-designed preamps, 24-bit at up to 192kHz, MIDI in and out.

Who it’s for. Producers who need two inputs and MIDI without spending three figures.

What it does badly. Build quality and driver stability are where the savings come from. Ask anyone who has used one for two years.

Verdict. The jump from £30 to £58 buys you 24-bit recording and a second input. That is the single best-value step on this entire list.

£115 — Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen

What it is. One mic preamp, one instrument input, two line outputs.

Who it’s for. Solo vocalists and rappers who will never need to record two sources simultaneously.

What it does badly. One preamp is one preamp. The day you want to record a guitar and a vocal together, you are buying another interface.

Verdict. The software bundle is doing real work here. Ableton Live Lite and Pro Tools Intro+ are included, so if you do not own a DAW yet the effective price is lower than it looks.

£147 — Audient EVO 8 USB Audio Interface

What it is. One Class A console preamp with 58dB of gain and under 0.002% THD+N, a discrete JFET instrument input, and two headphone outputs.

Who it’s for. Anyone using a dynamic microphone like an SM58, which needs far more gain than a condenser.

What it does badly. Still one mic input, at £24 more than the two-input Scarlett 2i2.

Verdict. The best-sounding preamp under £150 here, and the two headphone outputs matter the first time someone else is in the room.

£159 — Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen

What it is. Two mic preamps with 69dB of gain, two instrument inputs, and the same bundle as the Solo.

Who it’s for. The default for most people. Two inputs covers vocals plus guitar, or an interview, or a two-person session.

What it does badly. Nothing at this price, which is why it is the most common interface in home studios.

Verdict. If you want to stop researching and start recording, this is the answer.

£185 and £199 — SSL 2 MkII and MOTU M2

The SSL 2 MkII gives you 32-bit converters, 64dB of gain and a “4K” switch that adds a high-frequency lift borrowed from SSL’s 4000 series consoles. The MOTU M2 gives you a full LCD meter on the front, under 2ms round-trip latency and MIDI I/O.

Both are excellent. Neither will make a listener think your record sounds better than it would through the £149 Scarlett.

What to do

Match the interface to the microphone you already own, not to a budget. If you use a dynamic mic, gain is your bottleneck and the Audient iD4 MkII at £129 solves it. If you use a condenser and record alone, the Scarlett Solo at £105 is enough. If you might ever record two things at once, buy two inputs now, because upgrading later costs the whole unit.
