The £98 Foam Panel Set That Does Nothing to Your Bass.
Three IDIF posts now end by telling you to treat your room instead of buying more gear. This is the one that says what to buy.
Start with the finding that makes most treatment purchases a waste of money.
The problem with the foam everybody buys
The t.akustik SA-N30 set is £98 for eighteen convoluted foam panels, each 1000 x 500 x 40mm. It is the classic first purchase, and it covers a lot of wall for the money.
Thomann’s own listing states it is effective “from approximately 2500 Hz.”
Read that again. Everything below 2,500Hz passes through it more or less untouched. That includes your entire bass range, all of the low mids, and most of the frequencies where a bedroom recording actually falls apart.
Sound On Sound’s guide to studio acoustics explains why that matters. The damage in a small room comes from room modes, resonances that occur where a half-wavelength, or a multiple of one, matches a room dimension. At those frequencies reflections return either in phase and boost the level, or out of phase and cancel it. Small, roughly cube-shaped rooms often have a large hole in the bass right in the middle of the room, which is exactly where people sit.
Thin foam does nothing about any of that. It absorbs the top end, which makes a room sound quieter and duller, and lets people believe it worked.
The spec that actually matters
Thickness. Almost nothing else.
An absorber works on frequencies whose wavelength is short enough to interact with its depth. Thicker panel, lower frequency. This is the whole ballgame, and it makes comparison shopping easy.

Look at the last two rows. Almost the same money. One is two thin panels, the other is a single panel three times thicker that Thomann describes as effective across the low, mid and high ranges.
For the same £165, one panel beats two.
What to buy, in order
First, nothing. Hang a thick duvet on a microphone stand behind you when you record vocals. It costs zero and it kills the reflection arriving from directly behind the microphone, which is the one folding back into the capsule a fraction of a second after your voice. That single reflection is what makes a bedroom vocal sound like a bedroom vocal.
Second, soft furnishings. A rug, heavy curtains, a bookshelf with uneven contents. All cheaper than a panel and all doing real work in the mid range.
Third, one thick panel behind your monitoring position, if you have £165. Depth over coverage, every time.
Fourth, corners. Bass collects there. This is where you would spend the next £165.
What it does badly
Every option here is a compromise, and none of them makes a small room into a good room. A rectangular bedroom has the room modes it has, and absorption reduces their severity rather than removing them.
Thin foam is not useless either. If your problem is flutter echo and harsh top end on a spoken vocal, £98 of foam solves it. It just does not solve the problem most people buy it for.
Verdict
Buy the duvet, then the curtains, then one 150mm panel. Skip the eighteen-panel foam set unless you specifically need high-frequency absorption over a wide area.
For scale, t.akustik’s Producer Set L Advanced is £1,749. That is what comprehensive treatment of a medium room costs. You are not buying that, and you do not need to, but it is worth knowing the ceiling exists.
What to do
Record the same vocal twice, once in the middle of your room and once in a corner with a duvet on a stand behind you and something soft in front. Listen on headphones.
If the second one is better, you have just proved the point for nothing. Spend the £165 next month, on one thick panel rather than a boxful of thin ones.
